Monolithic platforms cost tremendous amounts, but corporations relying on them still face significant problems

For years, corporate executives have relentlessly pursued the idea that one corporate backbone of business systems such as SAP or Oracle would solve all of their problems.
These monolithic platforms cost tremendous amounts of money and resources, but corporations relying on them still face significant problems when it comes to operational efficiency and complete transparency throughout the enterprise.
Your CEO probably wants to know: Isn’t the ERP system fixing all that? Still, the answer for many organizations years after their ERP implementations is – surprisingly – no.
Known as “big-bang” enterprise systems, their authors promised significant advantages in set-up, maintenance, integration, and a single point of contact for service calls. The only problem with that is that the sophistication of business processes within many areas of the enterprise exceeds what ERP systems can handle – creating challenges that ripple all across the enterprise.
