In uncertain times, consumers seek old standby

Hot trends are noticeably cooler this holiday season as stressed-out consumers look to practical gifts and old standards.
"This year, there's not as many hot trends in fashion. The focus is on affordability," said Dan Butler, vice president, merchandising and retail operations, for the National Retail Federation in a conference call this week.
Designers and buyers for retail chains have been less willing to take chances on new, untried styles in the slow economy, experts say. And consumers are reacting to the financial crisis in ways similar to what happened after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Butler said. Read more
