Consumers and investors are wary. Recent headlines have blared warnings about tainted baby formula from China, salmonella outbreaks in the U.S. and toy recalls due to lead contamination.
Supply chain problems can harm not only public health, but also corporate reputations. On average, news of a supply chain disruption results in a 7.2% drop in stock value the day of the news, with further declines in the first days thereafter, according to research by Georgia Tech professor Vinod Singhal.
