Retail stores get fashions to market lickety-split

With the tighter economy squeezing retailers industrywide, several companies have hit on a successful formula for propping up earnings: They're speeding up the time it takes to get the latest fashions into their stores.
Chains ranging from J.C. Penney to J.Crew are scrambling to make their orders more precise, so they can stock just enough of the hottest styles for today's increasingly fickle and tight-fisted consumers.
Advances in software and technology are allowing stores to offer the latest trends weeks or even months faster than before and giving the beleaguered retailers more stable profitability, says Jeff Klinefelter, an analyst at Piper Jaffray. Among the retailers that Klinefelter says have raised their profit margins because of such improvements are Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap, Aéropostale and Kohl's. Read more...
